July 1 is Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day

You don't need an ice cream maker to enjoy Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day. All you need are a some basic ice cream flavors like vanilla and chocolate, some interesting mix-ins or liquors (you know, for the adults, while the kids are playing), and some imagination.

The king of creative ice cream flavors was not Ben or Jerry, it was Steve. That's Steve Herrell of Herrell's in Northampton, Mass. "He was the first person to grind Heath Bars, Reese’s cups, and other name-brand confections and mixed them into ice cream" according to Herrell's. It was his original Somerville, Mass. shop that inspired Ben & Jerry.

Some standard flavors you can find at Herrell's include Malted Vanilla and Chocolate Pudding. Around St. Patrick's Day, they're also known to sell ice cream that tastes like Guinness. The flavors get updated on occasion, and you can find a list of current flavors here. They also have the best hot fudge and whipped cream you'll ever taste.

* Order two or more flavors at your local ice cream shop to create a fun flavor.
* Smash in your favorite cookies, crackers, or go for broke and sprinkle on the bacon.
* Set up an ice cream mixing station for the family. Everyone should have a clean cutting board or plate for mixing the ice cream, as well as a hard spatula.
